With deep sorrow, the UP Office of the President would like to inform the public that Professor Emeritus Ruperto P. Alonzo passed away yesterday, on the 7th of November 2017. His wake is currently being held at the Sta. Maria della Strada Church, Katipunan Road, Quezon City from noon today to the evening of 10th November.
Professor Alonzo was a beloved faculty member of the UP School of Economics where he taught generations of young minds from 1968. Before his repose, he continued to serve the University of the Philippines as a Professorial Lecturer and as Policy Advisor and Fellow for the Energy Policy and Development Program. With his dedicated service to the University spanning 45 years and the reputation he has established in his field, he was named Professor Emeritus in 2016.
Aside from being a respected educator and economist, Professor Alonzo is also remembered as an able and reliable administrator, through his service as Vice President for Development (2005-2009), as Director of the Institute for Small-Scale Industries (2004-2009), as Director of the Program in Development Economics and of the Public Affairs Office, and as a UPSE Department Chair.
Outside UP, he served as Deputy Director-General for the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) from 1998 to 2001 and as Commissioner of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines from 2004 to 2010.
More than his achievements and service, he will be remembered as an inspiring colleague, teacher, and friend to many. The University will forever be grateful for the passion and brilliance he has dedicated to his life’s work, to our students, and to the Filipino people.
